Location: Southern Iceland,
15 miles (25 km) north of Vik
Lat / Long: 63.6° N, 19.1° W
Volcanic Type: Stratovolcano (subglacial)
Volcanic Status: Active, last eruption 1918

Skiable Vertical: over 4000 ft (1200 m)



Katla volcano is located under the southeast part of the Myrdalsjokull icefield, the fourth largest in Iceland at 220 sq. miles (580 sq. km). A large caldera 9 miles (14 km) in diameter underlies the ice, and eruptions often produce jokulhlaups (glacier-outburst floods). Access to the area is very direct from the coastal highway to the south, and ski traverses of the icefield (about 20 miles / 30 km across) are common.
