This is the actual crossing near the west end of the bergschrund, above a large bowl at the head of the Winthrop Glacier, with the 13720 ft false summit of Curtis Ridge visible at right. A 4 foot vertical overhanging lip provided a sizeable obstacle when climbing with skis on the pack. Jim has already scrambled over this, while Tom and I decided to head right a hundred feet to a much easier crossing. The two others visible above the bergschrund are a pair of telemark skiers, who had been showering us with frozen snow chunks as they skied down the icy slope above. (Those two telemarkers were the only other skiers, out of over 50 people who summited by the Emmons route that day.) They took off their skis at this point and hiked the tricky traverse section. During our descent, we skied (jumped) over the lip here and continued down for a short bit before also removing our skis and hiking.
