The surface at last! Alas, climbing over the lip of the crevasse proved to be the most difficult part of the rescue procedure, for both ropes had become deeply entrenched in the soft snow at the surface despite attempts to pad the lip to prevent entrenching. The slush allowed neither handholds nor footholds, with each attempt simply digging away more and more of the lip. I spent several minutes struggling here, with only my head out of the crevasse. Finally, an instructor tossed me a loop of webbing, which I grabbed onto as several people pulled me up the final few feet to safety.
